New Freshman Counselor at MHS Q&A

Mrs. Leslie Felipe Interview

Q: “How do you like MHS so far?”
Felipe: “It’s pretty good, it’s been a little bit of an adjustment, just coming to a new school.”

Q: “Have you been a counselor in the past?”
Felipe: “Yes, so this is now my 19th year as a counselor. I actually started here; my first two years as a counselor were here at Milpitas High, [from] 1999 to 2001. I spent the last 16 years at my alma mater, James Logan High School.”

Q: “What’s your favorite part of being a counselor?”
Felipe: “Working with students; I like to help students plan. The college planning is actually my favorite piece.”

Q: “What motivated you to become a counselor?”
Felipe: “In my last year in college, I went to look for an on-campus job when I was at UC Davis and I found a job posting at a high school that was maybe 30 to 40 minutes outside of the area, and I worked under the counselor there. It was a very small high school, and after working with the students there for a year, that’s when I decided that I was going to go into counseling. I was a psychology major so I always like working with people.”

Q: “What’s a secret talent that you have?”
Felipe: “My husband says that I can find any shopping mall. I have a really bad sense of direction yet I can find malls.”

Q: “What advice would you give to freshmen?”
Felipe: “Don’t take on too much, learn to be a high school student, get to know other students, get to know the school, and learn to balance everything.”

Q: “What advice would you give to other students in general?”
Felipe: “Find your passion, don’t do things because because you think it’s going to fulfill a checklist. I think there’s a college or a path for everyone, you just need to find one.”
