On March 23, all the classes united under one roof for an annual rally, Trojan Olympics, or battle of the classes. Trojan Olympics is a competition of dances, games, and pyramids, ASB Vice President William Lieu said. The results of the Trojan Olympics corresponded to class order, with seniors in first place, juniors second, sophomores third, freshman fourth.
Trojan Olympics, MHS’s biggest event, is set up by ASB and leadership twelve weeks before, Lieu said. ASB and leadership wake up early to set up, staying until midnight to clean up, Lieu said. Although that’s the hardest part, it’s also the most fun because friendships and bonds are made, Lieu continued.
“For me, the best part about Trojan Olympics is everyone coming together and leaving all the negativity aside,” Lieu said. “We want to make sure that our school is unified.”
After observing all the class practices, it can be anyone’s game, Lieu said. Trojan Olympics is fair game, and whichever class wants it the most will take home the trophy, Lieu said. The freshman, although against the odds, have stepped it up and showed a lot of spirit, Lieu continued.
“This is going to be my last Trojan Olympics and I’m going to enjoy it a lot,” Lieu said. “This is going to be a great experience for me as a senior.”
The Trojan Olympics allows the classes to come together as a school, Senior Karen Nguyen said. Each class becomes a team, and they each demonstrate their willingness to win through the dance, she said.
“Being in Trojan Olympics, having a class with sportsmanship, that matters the most,” Nguyen said. “[It’s about] being a part of a team and being united as a class, especially my class, who was so divided.”
Although the freshmen ended up in last place, they still achieved major accomplishments for their year, being the first known year to have sold out of Trojan Olympics tickets, Assistant Class Sponsor of 2021 Brett Webber said. For the games, while it would have been nice to have beaten the sophomores, the freshmen’s performance was not disappointing, he said. The freshmen did not know what they were going into, as it was the first year for both them and their class sponsors, Webber continued.
“It would have been nice to do a better, but we still have another three years,” Webber said. “The seniors have to win this year because they don’t have another year. I think it’s the way it should be.”
The Trojan Olympics has been going on for a very long time and is widely popular among different schools, Lieu said. Because of how large the event was, it took a considerable amount of planning, he continued.
