Between being a champion for early childhood literacy and making contributions to COVID-19 vaccine research, Dolly Parton released her album “A Holly Dolly Christmas” on Oct. 2. The album includes 12 tracks, ranging from familiar Christmas tunes to originals written by the “Jolene” singer herself.
The holiday album features contributions from Miley Cyrus, Jimmy Fallon, Michael Bublé, Willie Nelson, Billy Ray Cyrus, and Parton’s brother, Randy Parton. The range of features contributes to the eclectic sound of the album; the songs are soulful, jazzy, and of course, country.
Parton rejuvenates overplayed classics such as “Holly Jolly Christmas” and “All I Want For Christmas Is You” by adding elements to the songs’ traditional productions. In “Holly Jolly Christmas,” the addition of electric guitar gives the song a quaint and rockabilly quality. Similarly, in “All I Want For Christmas Is You,” Parton leaves her own impression on the Mariah Carey classic by subtly incorporating banjo into the background.
My favorite song on the album is “Cuddle up, Cozy Down Christmas,” featuring Michael Bublé. Parton’s unique voice accompanied by Bublé’s rich baritone makes for a memorable and enjoyable listening experience. Additionally, the production of the song has a swing feel that made me sway in my seat.
“Christmas on the Square” is the most noteworthy song on the album. With the banjo and violin in the background, the only words to describe this song are “yee haw.” The song definitely brings a fresh sound to the overdone genre that is Christmas music. “Christmas on the Square” is also the title of Parton’s new holiday movie which The New York Times describes as a “peppy holiday musical” with a “campy streak.” With all these projects, Parton proves herself to be a “Working Girl.”
While the album is not a standout, “A Holly Dolly Christmas” does offer several new and original songs that can be added to the playlist of any Christmas lover.
