Varsity boys soccer ties against Monta Vista, aims for CCS playoffs

The varsity boys soccer team tied 2-2 against Monta Vista High School in their Jan. 16th game. The team’s overall record as of Jan. 20th is 3-2-5,  and their league record is 0-1-3, according to the MaxPreps website.

The team mostly followed through with their game plans, midfielder and senior Gonzalo Sanchez said. They knew that Monta Vista’s right center back was a little weak and both of the team’s goals came from that side, he added.

“We had our left midfielder running behind, getting the ball into the box,” Sanchez said. “Maybe you could have attacked that side a little more during the second half.”

Sanchez was syncing up well with midfielders senior Jesse Ybarra and senior Luqman Abas, he said.

“It’s kind of hard when the game is so fast-paced,” Sanchez said. “The ball’s moving back-and-forth, back-and-forth, long ball after long ball, but I think overall, in the midfield we got pretty good chemistry, and we’re good at getting the ball out wide to our outside midfielders as well.”

A surprising moment was when Monta Vista scored a goal very early into the game, varsity boys head coach James Williams said.

“We just got caught with their counter-attack,” Williams said. “They’re good with playing with one touch, moving the ball through the channel.”

Defensively, the team did well adapting to the pace and speed of the Monta Vista players, Williams said.

“We haven’t given up two goals in a game for a couple of months now, so being able to fight through that and figure it out and not give up any more was good,” Williams said.

Offensively, the team’s crossing was really good this game, Williams said.

“Both of our wings were working really well,” Williams said.

Regarding the game’s result, a tie was not what they wanted, but it wasn’t horrible, Williams said. They need to keep working and win games, he added.
“Our goal is to get into playoffs and win the league, but we need wins to do that,” Williams said.
