Fashion Club Talks Plans, Challenges Faced

Fashion Club was chartered in 2022 to form a community that discusses sustainability in fashion and host events to provide members with the opportunity to buy and sell clothing, club treasurer Minthi Bui said.

Although they occasionally have slideshows discussing fashion-related topics for meetings, the officers try to make the club more hands-on for members, president Gisele Fan said.

“We’ve done sewing; we’ve done bracelet making,” Fan said. “I remember in the past there were some drawing workshops where you can make your own outfits, and we’re planning to do a screen printing workshop sometime in March or April.”

The events that Fashion Club holds and their focus on fashion sustainability is what drew freshman Daisy Yeung to join the club, shesaid.

“We saw the flea market on their Instagram page,” Yeung said. “We were interested in seeing what future events they have.”

The club raises funds for special equipment like a screen printing machine with their own events as well as through school-sponsored fundraisers, Fan said.

“There’s various CLOG food sales,” Fan said. “We also have the flea market where people can donate their old clothing, and we’ll help sell it for them, and then we receive 50% of the profit.”

With thirty sign-ups on paper and five regular attendees, gaining membership has become a struggle for the club, Bui said.

“It (membership) has dwindled,” Bui said. “A lot of the members have graduated, and we’re getting new members, but it’s harder.”

It is more difficult for niche clubs to get approval for events by ASB, vice president Kenisha Desai said.

“It’s easier for bigger clubs to get their events approved because they’ve done bigger events in the past,” Desai said. “Smaller clubs get a lot more review and criticism before they can have their event.”

Although CLOG rush has been a good way to get membership, the Fashion Club would like more help from ASB with publicity for their events and club, Fan said.

“They (ASB) do encourage us to do a lot more events, but they only help facilitate the events. They don’t actually help us publicize anything,” Fan said. “I feel like their motto for more events is kind of contradictory because so many clubs are doing so many events at the same time, you can’t possibly go to all of them.”

She encourages people to join the Fashion Club because of their engaging events, Fan said.

“We usually meet during lunch on Wednesdays,” Fan said. “Please join because we have a lot of cool things planned!”
