Bookmarking making event marks the end of LEO club’s community opportunities for this year

LEO club had a new community service opportunity on April 10, where students made bookmarks to be donated to local children’s libraries, according to vice president Huy Vo.

Students were given bookmark paper and craft materials to create custom bookmarks, Vo said.

“We had a group of around 25 to 30 students,” Vo said.“We handed them paper that they cut and decorated,” he added.

The event was a success, said publicist Su Thant. It was another event that help the local community in a fun way, she added.

“I’ve been involved in LEO club for a year,” Thant said. “It’s given me the opportunity to express my creativity and also contribute to the community on a flexible timeline,” she added.

LEO club, which stands for Leadership, Experience, and Opportunity, offers different community service opportunities throughout the year, Mendoza said.

“It’s a branch of the Lions International Club, and one of our main goals is to do humanitarian work,” Mendoza said. “We give students opportunities to get service hours and display leadership,” she added.

The club has had similar events in the past, but this was the first time they specifically created an event that supported local libraries, president Kirsten Mendoza said.

“We’ve done cardmaking, where we donated cards to patients at Washington Hospital,” Mendoza said. “We’ve also done blanket making, where we had students make blankets that were then donated to City Team, an organization that runs a homeless shelter in San Jose,” she added.

The club tries to have as many effective events as possible, Thant said.

“We get on a Discord call every month for around 2 hours,” Thant said. “We draw inspiration from social media and plan community service events that will be interesting for our members,” she added.
