Varsity Softball Hits Its Way To The End of The Season

Girls’ varsity softball had their last home game on May 15 against Homestead, and celebrated their team’s seniors. Although the team lost 17-7, the girls enjoyed playing together one more time and making unforgettable memories.

Senior and center fielder April Price enjoyed being able to watch her teammates grow throughout the season and play with them until the end, she said.

“I wanted to end this season strong,” Price said. “I wanted to hit; I wanted to have a good time with my teammates, have fun, but at the same time, I was looking to at least have a competitive game.”

Senior and catcher Destiny Solis enjoyed playing high school softball, but wished the team bond was stronger, she said.

“I think more team bonding and running together would have made this season better,” Solis said. “Like how coach says, ‘Conditioning helps you guys bond,’ but we only did that towards the end. So if we had done more of that in the beginning, I think we would have done even better as a team.”

Solis had previously committed to Sonoma State to play softball, and as well as Price committed to the Academy of Art for softball, but both programs cut their athletics due to budget deficits, Solis said.

“So now we’re going to West Valley and trying to transfer out from there,” Price said. “Our plan is not to go to another division school because we don’t want to rush into a school where we aren’t going to see ourselves staying for a while.”

Junior and utility player Dahana Gonzalez enjoyed being able to play with Price and Solis for the last time, making so many memories, she said.

“A memorable memory with the seniors was getting to see Destiny get a base hit for her last ever time at bat,” Gonzalez said. “For April, there are too many as she is always pushing us outfielders to be the best and being our biggest supporter.”

Leaving this team is very bittersweet, and Price hopes her teammates will continue to grow their skills and bond, she said.

“To my teammates, I would say to have a better mindset during the game,” Price said. “Also having a better attitude towards not only your teammates, but to improving and getting better, and to be more open-minded.”
