Wellness center brings out students’ inner child through finger painting

On Thursday May 22, the Wellness Center hosted a finger-painting workshop according to the Wellness Center liaison and Wellness coach Storm McNerney. This event was led by junior Sowmya Sundar for her Girl Scouts project and had close to 20 people in attendance.

Sundar has been working with her advisors for her Gold Award project for Girl Scouts, Sundar said.

“My advisor is Miss Fiona Walker, who’s an art teacher, and she helped me get this started,” Sundar said. “And also I get help from the two Wellness Center heads, which are Miss Storm and Miss Coronado.”

The workshops have been going on for the last couple of months, McNerney said.

“She came in with all the activities she already had planned,” McNerney said. “And we basically had been doing them weekly since February and we did take a little break (during AP Exams) because there’s a lot going on.”

Sundar has been leading these workshops and the finger-painting workshop was one of the most popular, according to McNerney.

“She’s been doing really cool activities like making a dream flag, tear art, scribble art, and postcards,” McNerney said. “And there’s been little therapeutic, almost like little therapeutic techniques.”

Sundar looked to make sure that students got what they needed at this time in spring, McNerney said.

“It is Mental Health Awareness Month, so that’s why we are offering a bunch of activities because it’s the most stressful time of the year and a lot of students are overwhelmed.” McNerney said. “It’s been really busy in here (Wellness center) lately when it comes to academic stress and whatever’s going on in people’s personal lives or social lives.”

Finger-painting was all about just freestyling and having fun, sophomore Madeline Gerber said.

“Personally, I feel like a little kid again, so I think it’s pretty fun,” Gerber said. “It just made me happy because people are struggling and sometimes a break is just good.”
