The boys varsity basketball team defeated Monta Vista High School with a score of 79-50 at home on Feb. 10. With the win, the team has an overall record of 21-1 and are first place in their division, adding to their winning streak of 12 games, according to MaxPreps.
The main goal coming into the game was to move the ball more, varsity boys head coach Champ Wrencher said.
“We need to have more assisted buckets, and trying to be more efficient on offense in general,” Wrencher said. “That was the goal of this week.”
The game plan was to step up on defense and shut down the basket for the opponents, Wrencher said. The offense’s goal was to make multiple shots in a row, he added.
“So you know just being patient and letting the natural ball movement find the open player and those guys were making shots, and that helped right there.”
The other team played a close game, especially during the start of the game, thus changing the game plan, Wrencher said.
“The other team played close, especially for the first quarter and a half,” Wrencher said. “I think when we started making some outside shots because they played zone and we got some more momentum when Jesiah Caampued and Alexander Dang made some shots from outside.”
Despite the win, the team could always be in better shape, Wrencher said. Conditioning is important, Wrencher added.
“The second thing is to continue really good outside shooting and catching and shooting,” Wrencher said.
Wrencher was very proud especially for seniors since it’s their last year and going to playoffs, he said.
“(I am) very proud, especially for the seniors to see them go on this run and play so well,” Wrencher said. “(We) win in dominant fashion. It’s pretty special, pretty unique.”
The win boosted the team’s momentum going into playoffs, Wrencher said.
“Just establishing a winning trend and trying to maintain it, and be in a position where that momentum creates a good start for us wherever we match up in playoffs,” Wrencer said.
The win feels good and the team does what they always do, junior Pranavram Kishnan said.
”We just keep doing what we’re doing and we expect the same result,” he said.
Everything the team does in practice helps them in games, Krishnan said. “And when we come out in the game, we just do everything the right way, pass the ball, play as a team and shoot the right shots and we expect a win every time,” he said.
The win is just another league win and it helps boost momentum, senior Ziad Elkordy said.
“It’s just another league win – clinch playoffs and good momentum going into the last few games of the season,” Elkordy said.
The mindset that you come into every game is important, Elkordy said.
“You got to come into every game thinking they’re a hard team,” Elkordy said. “So every game is a championship game.”
