How to prepare for earthquakes

By Evelyn Fu

2020 has been a year full of chaotic events. There were frequent earthquakes in the Bay Area towards the end of September, with multiple 3.0 magnitude earthquakes occuring a few miles away from Milpitas. Since Milpitas is surrounded by mountains, we are susceptible to landslides caused by earthquakes, so it is in everyone’s best interest to create a disaster plan. Here is what you can do to prepare before an earthquake happens:

  1. Secure furniture that may fall and lead to injuries, i.e. bookshelves, cabinets, light fixtures, etc. Tall furniture should be anchored to wall studs, and you should install a latch to keep cabinets closed.
  2. Make an emergency kit that would sustain each person for a week. Items you should include are the following: non-perishable food, water, a first aid kit, camping supplies (flashlights, blankets/sleeping bags, etc.), and back-up batteries.
  3. Plan out an emergency evacuation plan with your whole family. Make sure you know where you plan to go after the earthquake and how you are going to communicate with your family.

You also need to be prepared during and after the earthquake. During an earthquake, stay away from locations where there are windows, potential falling objects, doors connecting to the outdoors, and outside walls. Drop, cover, and hold on. Drop down so you won’t fall over. Protect your head and neck with your arms from falling debris. Hold on to something sturdy with one hand while you’re under a shelter. However, if there isn’t anything available for you to keep hold of, continue covering your head and neck.

When the shaking stops, first take a look at your surroundings and take note of things that may fall or for any possible gas leaks. After the earthquake, be aware of aftershocks which can last from days to weeks. If your family has insurance covering earthquake damage, document the destruction with photos or videos.
