What is character bounding?

Disney Parks have a rule where guests older than 14 are not allowed to wear costumes. However, Disney fan Leslie Kay created a way to work around this.

“Bounding” is a way to dress as a character in a more discrete way using inexpensive, everyday clothes. The trend originally started in 2017 and has not died down since. However, it is a smaller trend and something that many people may not have heard of before. If cosplay isn’t your thing, but you’d still like to show some love toward your favorite characters, you may want to try bounding.

More places are finally starting to open back up after the long wait caused by the pandemic, so this is the perfect time for DisneyBounding. Unlike a costume, bounding doesn’t require anything over-the-top or expensive. Simply using clothes you already have in your wardrobe will do just fine.

If you were bounding as Rapunzel, for example, you could wear a purple dress, some floral accessories, gold jewelry, and you could even put your hair in a braid. For Flynn Rider, you could wear a blue denim jacket over top a white shirt, some khaki pants, a belt, and some brown shoes.

Bounding as any character would consist of picking clothes from the same color palette as that character, wearing the same types of garments from leather jackets to dresses, doing a similar hairstyle, wearing similar accessories, etc. This is where you can really get creative in trying to emulate a certain character without matching their exact outfit piece for piece.

Bounding is great if you want to dress as your favorite character without being conspicuous. Plus, this practice can open your mind to different outfits. You might pair something together that you’d never think of if you were dressing normally.

A good thing to note is that bounding is not limited to just Disney characters. An outfit can be created for any character of your choosing, whether it be from a television show, an anime, or even a book.

Suddenly, so many new possibilities are open to you that you’ve never realized before! Indeed, it’s the true spirit of fashion.
