Senior Allyson Hom is now on her fourth year on the varsity basketball team for MHS and starts as the shooting guard. Hom is an excellent player and maintains great energy on the court. As one of the few returners this year, she has taken on a leadership role. Hom talks about her experience with basketball throughout her life.
Q: What inspires or motivates you to play?
A: I just really love the game. I’ve played for so long that I learned to love it from every aspect. Whether I’m a player, spectator or coach. I’m always inspired to just be around basketball.
Q: What makes basketball different from other sports?
A: “Basketball is different from other sports because it’s a combination of all your physical skills and also your mental. For example, having hand eye coordination while having good court vision.
Q: How do you deal with not liking or getting along with a teammate or coach?
A: When you walk into the gym, you just have to leave all your problems at the door. You’re not always going to like all of your teammates or your coach, but you definitely shouldn’t let that affect the way you play.
Q: What is your favorite part about playing basketball?
A: My favorite part about playing basketball is the joy and excitement it gives me. It teaches me to set aside any troubles I had before and pushes me to always give my best effort no matter what the score is.
Q: What has been your most memorable experience about playing for the MHS basketball team?
A: My most memorable experience playing at MHS is definitely all of the close relationships that I’ve made with my teammates and coaches. Every year, basketball season was the thing I looked forward to the most and I can’t imagine what I’d be doing if I never played.
Q: If you could give a piece of advice to any students looking to play basketball, what would you say?
A: It’s a sport that is not meant to be played perfectly. Mistakes are gonna happen, but the best thing about basketball is that every turnover or missed shot can almost always be made up for.
