Girl Genius Magazine seeks to inspire girls to pursue STEAM careers

By: Maansi Maskai

Girl Genius Magazine was recently started by Sophomore Shivali Gulati with the aim of inspiring females within the community to pursue careers in the diverse fields of science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM). Currently, Girl Genius Magazine publishes periodic magazine issues, blog posts, and weekly Youtube videos, interviewing women in STEAM as part of the series “Letting of STEAM.”

“We aim to showcase girls’ achievements in the STEAM field so as to garner for them, their much deserved praise,” Gulati said. “Our motto is to provide a platform for girls around the world to learn about women in STEAM and how they too, can make their mark in these fields no matter what.”

As founder of the magazine, her role currently is to manage all of the teams within the magazine, determine a layout for the magazine, create content for social media posts, and finding partnerships, Gulati stated. Recently, Girl Genius had the opportunity to partner with #BUILTBYGIRLS, a program that helps prepare women for jobs in the tech industry, she continued.

“We are doing a partnership with Kode with Klossy and we’re also reaching out to a bunch of hackathons,” Gulati said. “There is this hackathon going to be held in LA called AI Hacks and have recently collaborated with them. We are going to be featured in their hackathon.”

Although the magazine is independently run without the support of adult advisors, the MHS community has been very supportive overall of Girl Genius Magazine, Gulati stated. Many MHS students and clubs have also shown significant interest, she continued.

“One of my friends who goes to MHS [stated that she] stopped doing science stuff in middle school because none of [her] female friends were interested in it,” Gulati said. “But this [magazine] gives [her] hope.”

“[In the future,] we want to have a larger audience so we can reach more people and hopefully have more partnerships in the future,” producer of “Letting Off STEAM” Priyanshi Nigam said. “If you are a girl who is looking to either find her passion or just to explore new things, check out Girl Genius Magazine.”
