Humans of MHS: Aimee Sha

Can you briefly introduce yourself?

“I’m Aimee Sha, and I am currently a junior at MHS. I’ve made a couple of song covers on my Youtube channel and Instagram. I also enjoy producing for fun in my free time.”

Where did your nickname, ‘Lil Sha’ come from?

“As a kid, I actually produced and sang a lot. Of course, they weren’t good but I always thought it was fun and it was something I enjoyed doing a lot. The music I made is actually in SoundCloud and Lil $ha is the stage name. I think it is funny because I made a lot of silly covers and I also attempted to create my own radio called, “Aimee Radio Time.” I didn’t find these covers until Freshman year, when I uploaded them and got a lot of positive feedback and laughter from it.”

When did you get into music?

“I’ve been into music for as long as I can remember. I remember I would replicate the songs I hear from the radio on the piano starting at age 4 or 5. I loved singing, but I was not that good at it. I do remember singing everywhere I went and I remember singing along with Alvin and the Chipmunks. I only ever started to get really into singing my freshman year of high school. This is when I started getting into producing too and I pretty much produced any type of genre. I also started making singing covers along with making my own backing tracks during sophomore year.”

Is there a story behind each instrument you picked up?

“I play a lot of instruments. I like being my own band sometimes and I think it is fun to make music. In my room, I currently have 2 acoustic guitars, 1 ukulele, 1 electric guitar, 1 electric drum set, 1 keyboard, and a bunch of small random instruments to make music with. I also have a drumset and a piano downstairs too. For band at school, I play the saxophone. I started picking up all the other instruments besides piano in middle school and it was easy for me to learn because I mainly played by ear and that is how I learn best.”

How do your parents feel about your passion for music?

“My parents don’t really support the idea of pursuing music as a career for me. My dad, however, has given me the opportunity to do music for fun as he buys all my instruments for me. My mom took me to drumming lessons so I became the school’s jazz drummer sophomore year. I don’t think music is something that I would do as a career in the future. Instead, I want to major in business and marketing in hopes of finding a career that I am also passionate about. However, I would still like to keep doing music in my free time.”

What is one of your life goals?

“I think doing any type of art is a great way to express yourself and it has stuck with me my whole life. I use music as a way to create an outlet for my feelings. I like how there’s never a right way to do any art. It’s more of going with the flow and finding something that helps you have a deeper understanding of your feelings and emotions. I want to continue improving my music skills as I have so much to learn more about. I find myself to be a driven person towards success and I am always looking for a challenge or another level to reach.”

What is a message that has stuck with you your whole life?

“A teacher once told me, “Music is beyond the instruments you play; you are the music.” It stuck with me because it gave me a purpose for playing. After all, how an audience feels after a performance outweighs all.”
