Halloween Movie Night was a full house Friday night, with all 350 seats in the school theater being reserved and sold out, Activities Director Deana Querubin said. Students paid a dollar each to both reserve a seat and purchase a ticket to watch an ASB-hosted screening of “The Ring”, a horror film from 2002.
The event was part of ASB’s effort to make school life more engaging and memorable, Querubin said. Her leadership students are always looking for ways to boost school spirit and enhance the Milpitas High School experience, she added.
“We had limited seating,” Querubin said. “We expected a lot of people to want to come and see it, but we didn’t expect to get a full house. It’s pretty full in there.”
The Ring was chosen out of a list of movies by a student committee who felt that the film offered the right balance of storytelling and fright factor, Querubin said. The event offered various snacks and drinks, such as three-dollar popcorn, she said in an email.
“I think it’s just cool to have something festive for Halloween season,” Querubin said. “We hope that, through events such as this, it’ll be another memory for them to carry into their high school experience.”
Senior Arav Sharma enjoyed all the amenities the event offered, he said. Sharma initially attended the event just to go with his friends, but ended up enjoying the event, he said.
“It really unified us,” Sharma said. “It was excellent.”
Senior Alb Sefa explained that he would try to attend as many school events as possible in his final year here, especially those that are affordable and open to everyone. Movie Night helped Sefa foster a greater sense of school spirit with both his friends and other students, he said.
“I really did enjoy it,” Sefa said. “Honestly, it was wonderful. I felt a great sense of community. I was sitting next to friends. I loved it.”
I would love for ASB to do more movie nights, such as a winter-themed movie night, Sefa said. Sefa also hopes that many more events of a similar scale will be hosted by ASB in the near future, he said.
“I had a lot of fun,” Sefa said. “The amount of messing around and random noises was hilarious. The teachers were trying to crack down on that, but it is what it is.”
More activities are indeed in the works, though details have yet to be released regarding those events, Querubin said. In the end, with back-to-back holidays approaching, more events during the holiday season would help to get students into a festive mood with the added benefit of keeping the school experience exciting and fun, she said.
“Our purpose as a leadership team is to help students create memories,” Querubin said. “We just hope that people have fun and just enjoy their time together.”
Events hosted by ASB, such as Movie Night, help bring people together and strengthen the sense of community at school, Querubin said. These events are intended to bring students together from around the school for a shared experience, she said.
“I think it’s cool because it’s a fun way for them to scream together,” Querubin said. “I think that them having a good time just screaming and being scared together, it builds a little bit of camaraderie with them.”
