Taylor Swift’s new album Reputation was physically released on Nov. 10, creating a new era for the pop singer. Swift destroyed her past image and adopted a new, harder look with her sixth studio album. The instrumentals of the songs were completely rid of her trademark country and lively beat and was replaced with the trending, edgier sound. This new era of Swift music does not disappoint.

The singles that Swift released include “Call It What You Want,” Gorgeous,” “Look What You Made Me Do,” and  “…Ready For It?” The singles all have a more mature sound because they lack the trademark, repetitive pop tempo. “Call It What You Want” specifically showcased Swift’s personal side with lyrics such as “Nobody’s heard from me for months

I’m doing better than I ever was.” This album brings out the hard, stoic Taylor that is a complete twist of traditional lovesick lyrics.

The lyrics have also slowly strayed away from heartbreak from ex-boyfriends and instead concentrates heavily on female empowerment and self growth. “I Did Something Bad” includes lyrics like, “But if he drop my name, then I owe him nothin’.” Swift focuses on defeating the patriarchy by defying hateful men.

In order for music artists to stay relevant in the music scene, it is important for them to adapt to popular music trends. Taylor Swift strays away from her innocent, county persona for a darker, trendier sound in order to maintain her fame.
