Humans of MHS: Johnny Huang (part 2)

“Do I have strict Asian parents? I don’t think so. [Non-strict parents] don’t always check your grades, 24/7. They definitely give you a lot more freedom and privileges, like they let you stay up later. But ok, they let you stay later at like, events and stuff. They don’t really set a curfew for you to be back. How does that affect me personally? I get to be more free, I’m not stressed about when they want me to return, although sometimes if I do stay out really late, they do worry about me, so I take that into consideration. Going back to not monitoring my grades 24/7, I don’t really have that same motivation to do well. It’s like if I’m not motivated myself, then I can’t – there’s no one else really to push me to do better in school, so that’s one of the downfalls of that. Because I sometimes really don’t feel motivated to do well, I surround myself with people that are really competitive and do want to do well. So I can check myself, and I’m not lagging behind. It gets stressful sometimes, but it’s ok.”
